Welcome

Welcome to the OFFICIAL Spalding Photographic Society website.

The Society was formed in 1954 by a small select group of friends with a common interest in photography. One member of that group is still very active within the Society to this day, our president Ron Holloway.

Initially the group met one evening a month, enjoying visiting speakers very much as we do today.

In 1959 the Society was asked by the Farmers' Union to undertake the responsibility to make a photographic record of the very new Spalding Flower Parade. This quickly turned into something quite big and an off shoot company was formed (Spring Photographic) to cope with the demand of orders by the public for the transparencies that were being produced and ultimately sold. Ron says that the Society was providing a service for the town.

As interest in the Society grew, although Ron says that there were never more than 50 members at any one time, so the meetings became more frequent, to once every fortnight.

The advent of cine photography brought an added dimension to the Society with a separate group being formed and meeting on the other two evenings each month.

When cine photography was superceded by video, interest waned and the group disbanded but the Society continued to meet on a weekly basis with an expanding programme of events. During one of the early years the Society organised an international exhibition and received entries from a very wide area, including abroad.

In more recent times the Society purchased its own set of studio lights to satisfy the needs of members and coming right up to date, moving into the digital era, a laptop computer and a digital projector have been purchased.

Today, the Society has approximately 40 members of mixed abilities and ages. Both film and digital are welcome - the emphasis of the Society is to enjoy photography in its many branches.
